The first of three webinars leading up to the Global Feed Safety Summit in 2022 was held on October 7th. During this well-attended online event, leading experts shared their insights on biosecurity in the feed supply chain.
The webinar was organised by GMP+ International in collaboration with ALL ABOUT FEED, and can be viewed here. During the hour-long event, speakers discussed ways to mitigate the impact of viral diseases in the feed industry, like African Swine Fever.
After an introduction by host Vincent ter Beek, chief editor at PigProgress, Prof. Dr. Wim van der Poel, DVM, Senior Scientist at Wageningen Bioveterinary Research, held a lecture about methods for assessing virus inactivation procedures. Kobe Lannoo, Global Category Manager Pigs at Agrimprove, then shared his views on how to reduce risks of viruses by using natural mitigants.
As the final speaker, Johan den Hartog, Managing Director of GMP+ International, focused his address on the role the GMP+ Feed Certification scheme can play in controlling virus sources and transmission routes. Recent research suggests feed ingredients can be a carrier of animal diseases.
During the webinar, participants could ask questions and participate in online polls. Three quarters of the attendants (74 percent) answered in the affirmative when asked whether GMP+ International should integrate biosecurity in its scheme. In response after the webinar, Den Hartog said GMP+ International will work along with the feed sector to produce a guidance and scientific factsheet about the matter.
Den Hartog advises feed companies not to take a wait-and-see approach. He pointed out several elements currently in the scheme, like Prerequisites and HACCP, can already be used to contain biosecurity hazards.
