Specific requirements for by-products from the Oil and Fats Industry

Sunday, October 25, 2020

In August 2018, GMP+ International has published appendix GMP+ BA7. This appendix provides specific requirements for a number of by-products from the oil & fat industry. We have noticed that it is not completely clear to GMP+ certified companies how to apply all the monitoring requirements in a correct manner.

Regarding the monitoring it is important to keep in mind that:

  • Each batch must be monitored on a specified set of parameters. The monitoring program must result in a 100% positive release.
  • Monitoring must preferably be carried out by the producer. However, the producer can transfer this monitoring to the buyer
  • In case this buyer is a fat blender or a feed compounder, keep in mind that the monitoring must be carried out on the incoming material (the original product), and not after mixing it into a blend. This is considered dilution and is not permitted!

Regarding the labelling it is important to keep in mind that:

  • The product name (including botanical origin) and number according to Reg. (EU) No 68/2013, as amended, must be declared. This applies to both EU and non-EU-origin.
  • The GMO labelling must also comply with EU legislation. The conditions for correct labeling of the GMO status of the product are clearly laid down in EU legislation (Reg. 182/2002, which, among other things, discusses the traceability of food Reg. 1829/2003 and Reg. 1830/2003 regarding the traceability of GMOs). We urge you to request a correct label, when your supplier is delivering a genetically modified product.
